Steve is an American football coach and a former player. He was born to a Presbyterian minister, J. Graham Spurrier, and Marjorie, on April 20, 1945, in Miami Beach, Florida where he spent his early childhood. In 1957, his family moved to Johnson City, Tennessee and began playing football. He earned his name as a good player and a fierce competitor in Johnson City.

Further, Steve studied at Science Hill High School where he played three sports; basketball, baseball, and football. After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Florida and played college football. As a quarterback football player, he played well and won the Heismann Trophy in 1967.

Steve Spurrier signed a contract with the San Francisco $9ers in 1967 and began his professional career. He played for them for nine seasons. After that, he moved to Tampa Bay Buccaneers in April 1976 and played the tenth and final seasons.

He then switched his career to coach, started coaching in several colleges. Then Steve shifted to offensive coordinator before becoming the head coach of the Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League. After three seasons, Steve returned to college football and served as a head football coach at Duke, Florida, and South Carolina.

Currently, Steve is serving as the head coach of Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football.
