In his teen years, McGregor began training in the still relatively unknown sport of mixed martial arts, under the guidance of John Kavanagh.  While training, Conor also dabbled as a plumber, but finally decided to quit and concentrate on his dream of becoming a professional fighter.

On March 8, 2008, Conor made his professional MMA debut, under the banner of the London-based Cage Warriors. He won by TKO. Conor went on to lose two of his six fights, before going on a winning streak that saw him win both the featherweight championship and the lightweight championship, in 2012.

His winning streak went on through to July 2015, when he managed to defeat rival Chad Mendes, lifting the interim featherweight title.

On December of the same year, Conor knocked out Jose Aldo in a record 13 seconds, to unify the featherweight title.

McGregor winning streak finally came to an end when he jumped a weight class, to fight Nate Diaz at 170 pounds. Diaz wore out McGregor, forcing him to submit to a chokehold. During their rematch that August, McGregor again started strongly, before Diaz turned the tide. This time, however, the Irishman rebounded to win the fourth round. He then held on to win the highly anticipated fight by majority decision.

After that famous win, McGregor dropped back to the more familiar lightweight class. In November 2016, Connor gave another impressive showing, with a second-round TKO of Eddie Alvarez. The win simultaneously made him the UFC’s lightweight and featherweight championships.
